Ph.D Chemist and 20-Year Fiber Industry Veteran Joins Barnhardt to Advance Purification, Pharmaceutical, and Specialty Application Platforms
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 28
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Barnhardt, one of the world’s largest suppliers of purified cotton, today announced that Ingo Bernt, a distinguished fiber scientist and R&D leader with more than two decades of experience in cellulosic chemistry, nonwovens, and hygiene applications, has joined the company as Director of Research and Development in its fiber division.
Bernt will work in Barnhardt’s European division, with offices in France and now Germany, providing technical assistance, project management, process optimization, and sustainability expertise across Barnhardt’s purification and pharmaceutical platforms — supporting both European and North American customers.
“In a rapidly evolving fiber industry, Ingo brings a rare combination of deep scientific rigor and real-world application expertise. His brilliant product innovation and specialty product development are directly aligned with our values and direction,” said Lewis Barnhardt, President and COO of Barnhardt Manufacturing Co.“His PhD in chemistry, his patent portfolio, and his years working across cellulosic fiber technology, nonwovens, and sensitive applications make him exactly the kind of leader we need as we push the boundaries of what purified cotton can do. We are thrilled to have him on the team.”
Bernt joins Barnhardt following two decades at Kelheim Fibres GmbH. Before Kelheim, he served as a product developer at Kimberly-Clark Europe, where he managed product life cycles, development projects, and raw material qualification for the period products market.
“Barnhardt has built something truly distinctive — a benchmark purification standard, delivering the highest quality natural fibers, and a solid commitment to natural, traceable materials that stand apart in the global fiber market,” said Bernt. “I have spent my career working at the intersection of fiber science and real-world application, and I see tremendous opportunity to advance what natural, purified cotton can deliver for hygiene, pharmaceutical, and nonwoven customers. Bringing my R&D and application expertise to bear at this pivotal moment for the industry for a company known globally for product innovation and safety is a logical step.”
Bernt holds a doctorate in chemistry from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, awarded summa cum laude, as well as a Diploma in Chemistry from the same institution. He is also a Certified Patent Manager and has authored 16 patents.
Bernt’s appointment follows the recent addition of Richard Reid, a globally respected leader in absorbent fibers. It continues what Lewis Barnhardt has described as “the year of the great American cotton comeback.” Barnhardt said further announcements are forthcoming, including a new global initiative and the involvement of additional leading global fiber experts.
