EagleLIFT, Inc. Announces LiqueLock™ to Combat Leading Cause of Earthquake Damage—Soil Liquefaction.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TUESDAY, DEC. 12, 2023
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA-EagleLIFT, Inc., a leader in soil stabilization solutions, announced today the launch of a new product called LiqueLock, a patented injectable chemical grout technology designed to help counter the effects of seismically induced soil liquefaction.
“Liquefaction occurs when a soil’s strength and stiffness is reduced in response to strong ground shaking by what are called S waves, or secondary waves from earthquakes,” says Cliff Frazao, president of EagleLIFT. “Soil can go from a solid state bound by frictional contact forces to liquid, and that kind of liquefaction beneath buildings and other structures can cause the devastating results we saw in Niigata, Japan; Christchurch, New Zealand; Palu, Indonesia, and closer to home here in Loma Prieta and San Francisco. Buildings and bridges just sink into the earth.”
Frazao says new research shows liquefaction doesn’t require a major seismic event and that even smaller events can cause it beneath buildings and infrastructure. “Here on the West Coast, we’ve seen the effects of soil liquefaction at considerably lower seismic-energy density levels. That’s why we formulated this patented product we call LiqueLock to help provide greater resistance to sheer stress from any size event.”
According to Frazao, LiqueLock provides and enhances soil stabilization through a proprietary chemical grout technology, offering a no-excavation approach to significantly enhance soil stability in seismic zones. “It involves the injection of a proprietary chemical grout via a perforated lance delivery system that permeates at-risk soil binding the particles together and increasing the soil’s cohesion and resistance to seismic forces. By enhancing the strength and stiffness of the soil, LiqueLock effectively prevents the soil from behaving like a liquid during earthquakes.”
Frazao says his company validated LiqueLock’s effectiveness in three major ways: internal lab testing, real world field testing, then subjecting the material to a study by the Univ. of Calif. San Diego (UCSD). The findings validating the product’s effectiveness are documented in a paper published in the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Journal of Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering.
“The positive findings from UCSD and the ASCE journal prove what our field testing showed—engineering firms, construction companies, and infrastructure developers now have a new tool to safeguard communities and vital infrastructure in earthquake-prone regions. Another plus of LiqueLock is it’s a non-invasive, no-excavation, highly cost-effective process that minimizes disruption to existing structures and the surrounding environment.”
